World War I beginning, in 1914, New Zealand occupied the German protectorate the Western Samoa. Islands at first were under the mandate of New Zealand, then became her ward the territory, and only in 1962 of Samoa became the Polynesia's first independent state. In 1997 from the name of the state the word "Western" was lowered.
